WellStar My Chart Health System has developed an innovative solution that will improve patient experience and provide better care. WellStar MyChart will give patients access to their electronic medical records, which includes instructions, next steps and medication lists. This service is available to patients at WellStar, the Georgia-based health system.
Studies have shown that patients who are part of the healthcare team are more involved in their care and enjoy better outcomes. Patients and caregivers can forget what their doctor prescribed or said if they are tired, sick, or stressed out during a doctor’s visit. WellStar My Chart makes it easy for patients to access important information at their convenience.
Jon Morris, M.D. chief information officer at WellStar Health System, stated that ‘Open Notes’ has been implemented in the WellStar My Chart patient portal. This allows patients to understand their health information more easily and create flow charts creates a collaborative environment. This improves care by strengthening the relationships between providers and patients and caregivers. It is crucial that we include patients in our care teams. We know this will help patients better manage their care, understand their medical issues and communicate with their providers more effectively.
In 2010, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded a national study that tested open medical notes with 105 primary-care physicians and more then 13,000 patients. It was a voluntary year-long program.

Risa Lavizzo–Mourey, M.D. president and CEO, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, says, “When this study started, it was fascinating in theory.” It has been proven and tested. The evidence is clear: Open medical notes are supported by patients and used by them. These are great results that hold immense promise to transform patient care.
